A complete high-strain-rate testing and data-analysis setup

The project required more than the pressure-bar assembly. MPI delivered the bars, striker options, pressure system, instrumentation, acquisition hardware and software environment as a coordinated research setup.

The recorded configuration was designed for dynamic testing across a wide strain-rate range, with high-frequency data capture and tools for producing strain, stress, strain-rate and stress–strain outputs.

Project specification and technical scope

The values below describe the published configuration delivered for this project. A new system can be configured against the buyer's required capacity, materials, controls, utilities, layout and compliance needs.

Pressure-bar assembly

Bar material
AL-7075 incident and transmission bars with 18 mm recorded diameter.
Bar lengths
1,900 mm incident bar and 850 mm transmission bar.
Striker options
Recorded striker lengths of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 600 mm; recorded velocity 50 m/s.

Pneumatic and test range

Pressure system
25-litre pressure tank with recorded operation up to 4 MPa.
Strain-rate range
Recorded range of 100–10,000 s⁻¹.
Installed footprint
Published setup dimension up to 9 metres.

Data acquisition and analysis

DAQ
Four-channel acquisition system with recorded maximum response frequency of 1 MHz.
Instrumentation
Digital oscilloscope, data logger, signal conditioners and supporting accessories.
Software functions
Data import/export, processing, curve creation, browsing, management and report output.

What MPI coordinated and delivered

  • Coordinated the mechanical, pneumatic, instrumentation and computing elements as one testing system.
  • Supplied the bar assembly, striker set, pressure system and data-acquisition components.
  • Managed installation, alignment, commissioning and initial verification.
  • Provided operational guidance for testing, data capture and basic result processing.

Project outcome

Integrated dynamic testing

The delivered setup combined loading hardware, sensing, signal conditioning and data acquisition for high-strain-rate work.

Structured result processing

The recorded software functions support stress, strain, strain-rate and stress–strain output development.

Commissioned research system

MPI coordinated equipment supply, on-site installation and the operating handover for the university laboratory.
